Awesome Autistic Kids Surf Wrightsville / Rachel Coleman Concert Friday
Wrightsville Beach, NC . . . Two hundred families from across the United States (including a participant from Alaska) are traveling to Wrightsville Beach this week to witness the miracle of Surfers Healing, an international surf camp for kids with autism.
This event takes place at the popular Stone Street beach access located in the heart of downtown Wrightsville Beach on Thursday, August 19, from 9 AM to 3:30 PM. Spectators are welcome to “cheer” the children.
Inspired by Isaiah Paskowitz, son of pro surfer Israel Paskowitz, Surfers Healing Camps are hosted in Hawaii, California, Mexico, Puerto Rico and towns like Wrightsville Beach. These camps enrich the lives of people living with autism by exposing them to the unique experience of surfing. Members of the international surfing community travel with the event and work one-on-one to coach children with autism to ride the waves.
Footage of this heartwarming experience was captured last year by the Oprah Winfrey Network Discovery Channel film crew and will air sometime in 2011.
Rachel Coleman Concert: On Friday, August 20, at 6 p.m. Surfers Healing will also present a free concert in Wrightsville Beach Park featuring Rachel Coleman of Signing Time. In only a few years, the Signing Time program has spread by word of mouth (and PBS) to all 50 states and over 20 countries. Coleman’s Sing and Sign performance is a fun and easy way to introduce sign language to children of all ages. Bring your blankets and beach chairs!
