Surf Camps at Wrightsville ‘Pay It Forward’
Indo Jax Visually Impaired Surf Camp
Wrightsville Beach, N.C. – Named one of the Top Ten surf towns in the country by Surfer Magazine, Wrightsville Beach special needs surf camps are now in session.
Families from across North Carolina, the nation, and international destinations travel to Wrightsville Beach to participate in free surf lessons with surf school professionals that offer charitable outreach camps for kids and adults.
These special needs have inspired Wrightsville Beach surf camp directors to develop unique, one-of-a-kind, how-to-surf programs. Like IndoJax Surf School’s week-long camp for the visually impaired; Ocean Cure’s surf camp for the hearing impaired; WB Surf Camp’s outreach camp for those diagnosed with alopecia; and for those diagnosed with autism, the internationally recognized Surfers Healing.
Still other camps cater to those diagnosed with juvenile diabetes, those diagnosed with cystic fibrosis and those with spinal cord injuries.
But you won’t need to wait if you are a special needs child or adult to learn to surf with WB Surf Camp. The camp offers a complimentary private lesson to special needs children and adults, during the surfing season. Sessions are also arranged for nonprofit groups.
Wrightsville Beach also attracts two national, special needs surf camps that make annual stops to this clean watersports destination. The frontrunner is Surfers Healing arriving on Aug. 22. Families come to Wrightsville Beach to participate in Surfers Healing, one of only 16 locations on the coast-to-coast tour. Founded in California by professional surfer Israel “Izzy” Paskowitz for his son, Isaiah, who was diagnosed with autism at age three, Izzy discovered the positive impact that surfing had on his son, and now shares this unique therapy with other children diagnosed with autism.
Those families who missed the Surfers Healing registration deadline are invited to Wrightsville Beach for Ocean Cure’s camp for children diagnosed with autism Aug. 23-26, or the Autism Surf Camp by IndoJax Surf School August 29-September 2.
On Aug. 27, in conjuction with Ocean Cure, the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation’s, Life Rolls On/They Will Surf Again event returns to Wrightsville Beach. Last year, more than 100 volunteers assisted teens and adults with spinal cord injuries into the water and onto surfboards. Volunteers are needed again this year.
Ocean Cure also features weekly programs every Friday after school for special needs children (Team Jellyfish), and monthly programs for Wounded Warriors.
Since its founding, IndoJax has committed to serving the special needs of many.
In one extraordinary outreach mission during the off-season, IndoJax takes its surf camp overseas to the peninsula of India where it leads surf camps to hundreds of young women, at the Home of Hope orphanage in southern India proving yet again, that Wrightsville Beach surf camp pioneers are on a mission: to pay it forward.
