CHARLOTTE, NC – On Saturday, Oct. 1, 2016, the Komen Charlotte Race for the Cure®, historically one of the largest and most successful races in the southeast, returns to Marshall Park for its 20th anniversary.
Last year, with Category 4 Hurricane Joaquin pounding the Atlantic, heavy wind and rain whipping the east coast, and high winds and flash flooding in the eastern Carolinas, the 2015 Komen Charlotte Race for the Cure® scheduled for Oct. 3, was canceled.
“Just as communities pull together to rebuild following hurricanes and natural disasters, we must and will do the same for Charlotte’s Race for the Cure®,” said Tami Simmons, Executive Director of Susan G. Komen Charlotte.
“This year we invite all breast cancer survivors, family members, friends, and supporters across North Carolina and the nation to join us at the Charlotte Race to bid farewell to Hurricane Joaquin,” added Simmons.
In recent years, crowd estimates for the Charlotte Race ranged from 15,000 to 20,000, raising about $1.5-million each year. To register for or contribute to the 2016 Komen Charlotte Race for the Cure®, visit: www.komencharlotte.org and register as an individual, join a team or donate to an individual or team.
Festivities for the 20th Annual Komen Charlotte Race for the Cure® begin in Marshall Park at 6:00 a.m. and include a 5K timed race, 5K non-competitive run/walk, one-mile route, Kid’s Fun Zone, race expo, Survivor’s Village, displays and entertainment. The timed run begins at 7:15 a.m. and the walk/run starts at 7:50 a.m.
Despite the cancellation in 2015, the Charlotte event raised $1.2 million, enabling Komen Charlotte to grant nearly $1 million to 20 community health programs. These programs provided thousands of women and men life-saving breast health screening, education and treatment support throughout the year.
A maximum of 75 percent of net proceeds from Race for the Cure stays in the local community to fund community health programs in a 13-county service area.
The additional 25 percent of net funds supports the Komen Research Program, boosting major research projects across the country, including breast cancer research at North Carolina universities.
The Race for the Cure® is also a celebration of life where men, women, and children gather to honor survivors and forever fighters (those with metastatic breast cancer) in the battle against cancer and to remember those who have lost their lives to this devastating disease.
The Komen Charlotte Race for the Cure® is presented locally by Novant Health and Mecklenburg Radiology Associates.
October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
